Recent issues at Horsehead Lake in Johnson County have forced the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to drain the lake and repair the newly installed water-control structure.
The 100-acre lake was drained last summer to install the new water-control structure, renovate the boat launch and swim beach, add fish habitat and lime, and improve boating in the lake. All improvement projects were accomplished and the gate was closed on October to let the lake refill.
Pending weather-related delays, the AGFC plans to have the structure repaired and closed by March 1, 2014, allowing the lake to fill with natural rainfall. Fish stocking will occur in 2014 once water levels are sufficient to ensure high fish survival.
