The Army Corps of Engineers has issued a small craft advisory for the Arkansas River from Ozark Lock and Dam downstream because rains are pushing flows above safe levels for small craft. Advisories are issued when flows reach 70,000 cubic feet per second. Currents become swifter and stronger, and large debris is carried downstream.
Depending on the full impact of rain still underway, the advisory could be extended to the western border of the state.
Flows at Ozark Lock and Dam near Ozark are expected to climb to the 70,000 c.f.s. range Thursday. At Dardanelle Lock and Dam, flows are expected to climb into the 80,000 c.f.s. range Thursday. Flows at Murray Lock and Dam at Little Rock and at Emmett Sanders Lock and Dam at Pine Bluff are expected to climb to near 120,000 c.f.s. by Friday.
More rain could push flows higher or cause the advisory to remain in effect longer. All pleasure boaters are urged to stay off the river until flows recede to safe levels. Daily river information can be obtained on the Internet at http://www.swl-wc.usace.army.mil.
