Youth Conservation Corps Seeks Applicants for Summer Jobs

Are you a young man or woman, 15-18 years of age, interested in a summer job?  Mark Twain National Forest is seeking interested youth to apply for summer employment under the Youth Conservation Corps program (YCC).

Applications will be accepted through April 15, 2010.

Youth Conservation Corps program enrollees will complete needed conservation work on public lands and have the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the natural environment.  Youth Conservation Corps is an 8-week working session for 7 young men and women to learn natural resource management.  The emphasis will be a hands-on learning experience through participating in a variety of work situations with specific outcomes that benefit natural forest communities.

The program will include environmental education with Mark Twain National Forest Ranger District specialists/ Work will include campground maintenance and renovation, trail building, planting projects to rehabilitate areas, wildlife and fisheries projects as well as office administration.

The summer job program will select for hire, through a random drawing, an equal number of young men and women, and employ a 7-person crew with one alternate per location.  Selected youth will be paid minimum wage for a 40-hour week for eight weeks.  The crew will meet each morning at the Forest Service location.  Employment will begin June 7 and go through July 30, 2010.  Each selected applicant must provide work boots, proper work clothes, and their own lunches.  Applicants must be prepared for hard physical work in an outdoor environment under potential adverse weather conditions and rough terrain.  Applicants will need to provide their own daily transportation to the Forest Service location.

Applications must be submitted in “hard copy” form to the local High School counselors’ office; or at the Ava or Doniphan addresses listed above, by April 15, 2010.  Email applications will not be accepted.
