Concerned about increasing summer temperatures, decreasing rainfall and rising water bills—but still want to have a beautiful garden?

If so, plan to attend a special event set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 19 at the Xeriscape Garden on the corner of S. National Ave. and Linwood (southeast corner of Phelps Grove Park).

The “open house” will provide answers and visual options for water conscious gardeners according to Gaylord Moore, horticulture specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

The Xeriscape Garden demonstrates a wide selection of beautiful plants that can be grown with little or no irrigation. The garden is also beautifully maintained by members of the local chapter of Master Gardeners, a University of Missouri Extension volunteer program.

“We are encouraging folks to visit the garden on Saturday to see visual examples of what can be done. Trained Master Gardeners will show substitutes for your water-guzzlers and strategies for keeping your plants moist, healthy and beautiful,” said Moore.

The garden is sponsored by the Springfield Parks Department, City Utilities of Springfield and the Master Gardeners of Greene County.

University of Missouri Extension programs focus on the high-priority needs of Missourians. Each county extension center, with oversight by locally elected and appointed citizens, is your local link to practical education on almost anything.
