Travelin’ the Ozarks: Events Taking Place During January

Each year, approximately 100 bald eagles migrate to the Bull Shoals area. On Jan. 8-9 during Eagle Awareness Weekend, the Bull Shoals-White River State Park in Bull Shoals will offer activities centered on this national symbol. Events will include lake and river tours, guided bird walks, guest speakers, live bird demonstrations, kids’ activities and live entertainment. A King’s Day Mardi Gras Kick Off will take place at 5 p.m. on Jan. 9 at the Rowdy Beaver Restaurant & Tavern in Eureka Springs. The Krewe of Krazo will announce its dukes and duchesses and king and queen of the royal court for Eureka Gras, a Mardi Gras celebration in the town. The kick-off event will include King Kake, dancing, and second line strutting. There will be free food for anyone masked or in costume. The Old Independence Regional Museum in Batesville will host a Women’s Work Workshop on Jan. 16. Participants will learn about the daily lives of women on the Arkansas frontier by trying different crafts, such as candle making, weaving, churning butter and making cheese. Nothing says comfort like a steaming bowl of soup on a cold winter day. In Mountain View, the Ozark Folk Center State Park staff holds a Fourth Friday Food Day to teach people how to cook traditional and contemporary foods. The Jan. 22 class will be Savory Winter Soups.
