Springdale, AR Wants a Trail System in Town

By a unanimous vote, the Springdale (AR) Planning Commission approved a plan for a trail system that would link the community with Lowell and Johnson. The plan now goes before the City Council at its regular April 14 meeting.

Although trails can cost as much as $100,000 to build, most of Springdale’s planned system follows existing rights of way which should help keep costs down. The city is also hoping to qualify for grants and solicit donations so that little if any money will come out of Springdale’s coffers.

If the council approves the measure, park officials say they would have added clout when negotiating funding.

The concept would help link communities within the city and most trails would follow along existing sidewalks and other rights of way. Park leaders are also hoping to place some trails along the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad rights of way as Fayetteville has. While the railroad has not yet been approached, plans are already in the works to contact officials there as soon as a positive voting outcome is apparent.
