Plan Today for March Holidays

You may not get the day off from work and it isn’t likely Wal-Mart will stock cards for the season, but there a few national holidays coming up in March for which you may want to plan your own celebration of sorts.

This Saturday, March 12, is Plant a Flower Day. While that date is a little too early for most outdoor plants in the Ozarks this time of year, it’s not a bad time to start some flower sets from seeds indoors. When the weather warms up a bit and the chance of frost has diminished—like mid-April—you’ll already have some hearty offerings for the great outdoors.

This may also be a good time to get your kids involved in gardening, or at least growing something. Planting a seed in some rich soil and watching it sprout, then grow is a wonderful learning experience. So, buy a few seed packets, some bio-degradable compost pots and start something.

Right on the heals of Plant a Flower Day is Save a Spider Day, which falls on Monday, March 15. That makes this a long holiday weekend. This festive occasion may make arachnophobes a little squeamish, but the idea is to let our eight-legged friends go on about their business unharmed for the day. Even in our homes. Spiders do help us out by preying on other insects, helping free our domiciles of less desirable bugs. Hopefully, you won’t spot a black widow or a brown recluse on the 15th, or on any other day for that matter.

On Wednesday, March 30, it’s time to put on a pair of sweats or shorts depending on the weather and get in tune with Take a Walk in the Park Day. Check out one of your favorite haunts and see how it fared over the winter, or take in some new scenery at a spot you’ve thought about visiting but just hadn’t found time yet to discover.

March is a fickle month with respect to its weather, but it’s still a great time to plan on getting outdoors and taking in the waning days of winter and the budding days of spring.
