Carolyn Hasenfratz, a fan of historic Route 66 and a member of the Route 66 Association of Missouri (http://www.missouri66.org) and Friends of the Mother Road (http://www.friendsofthemotheroad.org/), began a web site in 2002 called John’s Modern Cabins News (http://www.jmcnews.com). The original purpose of the site was to get the word out about an historic Route 66 site in Missouri that was endangered. After the immediate crisis with John’s Modern Cabins had passed, Ms. Hasenfratz expanded the scope of the web site to get the word out about preservation projects and to encourage historic preservation on all parts of Route 66.

To meet this goal, the John’s Modern Cabins News web site contains preservation news, suggested actions, opinions, a promotion directory and a free directory for historic business on Route 66. Directory listings may include a photo and a link to the businesses’ web site. Ms. Hasenfratz offers this service free of charge because she believes that one of the best ways to preserve the heritage of Route 66 for the future is to keep historic businesses vital and open.

Ms. Hasenfratz has recently installed an online form using technology provided by her employer Webinar Resources of Normandy, Missouri, to make it easier for business owners to submit their information to the directory. Historic businesses on Route 66 who want to be listed in the directory are invited to go to http://www.jmcnews.com/preservation_businessdir.html and use the online form provided, or if they prefer, download a printable form and mail it in.
