The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is holding a “Power of Plants” contest for students with a Grand Prize of a $1,000 Savings Bond.

The contest is divided into separate categories for elementary, middle school and high school students. In addition to the Grand Prize, there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each category.

The Missouri Botanical Garden wants to introduce students to the amazing power of plants through this contest. They would like contestants to pick a plant, learn about it and create something that tells the plant’s story. For example, some plants have healing benefits, others might grow in adverse conditions and more still lend themselves to products humans enjoy every day.

That something creative students design to tell their plant’s story can include things like cartoons, news articles, models, action figures, sculptures, posters, stories, pamphlets, and flyers. But these are only a few suggestions. Contestants are encouraged to come up with unique ideas of their own as well.

Winning entries will be displayed at the Botanical Garden and on its website. The contest is open to Missouri and Illinois residents only.

The contest ends on January 31, 2009 and all entries must be received by 4:00 p.m. Central Time on that date. In May, at a date to be announced, all participants will be honored at a reception ceremony. Winning entries will also be announced at that time.
