MDC Announces Postcard Contest Winners

The Missouri Department of Conservation held a postcard contest for students in kindergarten through the 8th grade. The theme of the contest was “Ozark river and stream habitat—we gotta have it!”

The postcard contest, meant to draw students’ attention to sensitive species in the state, drew a response of 2,600 hand drawn entries from 60 schools and from home schooled children all across Missouri. Teachers said that the contest did its job - students realized that endangered species were not simply the ones they heard about in far away places, but in their own backyards as well.

While the department was unable to give individual awards to all entrants, it was able to display all 2600 entries in the Capitol rotunda in Jefferson City, and did so from Saturday, November 15 through Tuesday, November 18.

Each of the first place postcards will now be printed up and placed for sale at the Missouri Department of Conservation Nature Shops and all proceeds will go toward habitat conservation for endangered species.

K-2nd grades

* Third place: Jamie Sampson

5-6th grades

* First place: Meng Zou
* Second place: Lilly Chauncey
* Third place: Libby Kaiser

7-8th grades

* First place: Olivia Deeken
* Second place: Rebecca Ormonde
* Third place: Katie Blake
