Lake Conway Winter Drawdown Begins

By Arkansas Game and Fish

First posted on 11-27-2009

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has started to draw down Lake Conway approximately one foot to its winter lake level. Since 1977, the AGFC has reduced the lake level between Nov. 15 and March 15.

The purpose of the drawdown is to allow for flood water storage during the historically wettest months of the year. Matt Horton, the AGFC’s district lake manager, says he understands the drawdown brings a burden to some lakefront property owners who have trouble accessing their piers and boathouses during this time. “Over the years this problem has become more evident due to siltation in some areas of the lake,” Horton said.

The AGFC is working with the Lake Conway Advocacy Group on the renovation of Grassy Lake Road, below the dam, and a watershed assessment, which will include looking at alternative designs to the spillway that could allow the AGFC to hold the lake at normal pool (263 feet MSL) year round and better alleviate flood water.
