The Healthy Yards for Clear Streams program, which promotes environmentally responsible lawn and landscape practices, will hold a two-day workshop in Columbia, Nov. 19-20.

“Our goal is to promote lawn care practices that, while still creating beautiful lawns, help reduce harmful chemicals that may run off and contaminate local streams and water supplies,” said Mary Kroening, University of Missouri Extension horticulturist.

Topics will include how yard care relates to the health of streams, organic and natural lawn care and safe use of over-the-counter lawn care products.

The workshop also will discuss native plants, integrated pest management, effective use of garden chemicals, and operation and maintenance of lawn care equipment.

Participants will learn how to set up and host a Healthy Yards for Clear Streams program in their area.

Registration is $75, which includes lunches and a continental breakfast.

The workshop will take place at the Boone County Extension office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. the following day.

To register or for more information, call 573-882-9633 or 573-882-9630.

The project is partially funded by USDA and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
