“Greening of Arkansas,” a program that offers grants in support of developing community gardens, parks and high-profile green spaces, has opened the applications for the 2011 grant year.
The deadline to submit applications is September 1, 2010. Grants are funded by proceeds from the annual Arkansas Flower & Garden show, which will mark its 20th year in 2011.
“This program was developed to encourage neighborhoods, community organizations and city agencies to promote a greener and cleaner environment,” said Krista Quinn, executive director of the Arkansas Flower and Garden show. “We see the results of this program in winning communities in the form of community pride, rejuvenated streets and re-energized neighbors.”
Past winning projects include:
Paris-Logan County Coal Miners Memorial. Fifty years after the coal mines closed, this memorial was built to honor the 2,000 miners who worked in Logan County, and to restore the history and pride of mining in and around Paris, Ark., from 1880-1955, with a memorial park.
Community Garden-Argenta Neighborhood Boosters. In partnership with the Junior League of North Little Rock, new gardens being developed on city grounds of historic Manees House in the Argenta Historic District to promote community fellowship
Downtown Courtyard. The Late Bloomers Garden Club/Bald Knob Garden Club and the Fine Arts Council developed a project to build a courtyard with outdoor performance stage on lots that were once covered with the remains of burned-out buildings, debris and trash.
