A gorilla at the Calgary Zoo picked up a knife that had been dropped by a keeper, pointed it at a second gorilla then placed the knife on a chair inside the exhibit so that zoo officials could remove it.
About 20 or so visitors were startled to watch the creature pick up the knife and some said the gorilla picked it up correctly, smelled it and looked it over before the second gorilla arrived on the scene.
The knife-wielding gorilla lifted the knife and the second gorilla, which may have sensed danger, stepped away. That’s when the gorilla with the knife placed it on an old chair.
Apparently, the knife had been dropped by one of the zookeepers when he was cleaning out the exhibit.
Zoo officials are looking into the incident to see if any procedural change are warranted to prevent similar situations from occurring.
