Google Earth has introduced an expanded layer that allows hikers to do a little scouting before heading out to the trails.
The Trimble Outdoors Trips layer has GPS-marked trails and information on hiking, biking, camping and other activities available at each location. Directions to the trailheads as well as a difficulty ranking are also displayed. Some of the trail information includes photos, sights to explore along the way, plus video and audio clips on some of the spots.
As an added benefit, all of the information can be immediately downloaded to a cell phone and, if that phone has GPS enabled, the actual trail coordinates will be sent along as well.
At present, there aren’t many Ozarks trails listed, but users can upload their routes and trail data by following a link to the Trimble website.
Launch Google Earth and take a look under the Layers tab on the left-hand menu bar. Select Gallery, then check the Trimble Outdoors Trips layer and have a look around.
