Free Fishing Days have become a tradition in Arkansas, looked forward to by persons with licenses and long experience as well as those who wonder what all the talk is about.
This year it is from noon Friday, June 11, to midnight Sunday, June 13. Governor Mike Beebe has proclaimed it, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has put into play the rules and activities all around the state.
Here are some questions and answers about Free Fishing Days.
Do Free Fishing Days include trout fishing, where separate permits are required the rest of the year?
Yes, trout fishing is free on this weekend.
Are Free Fishing Days just for Arkansas residents?
No, non-residents can fish free also.
What are the daily limits on Free Fishing Days?
Regular creel limits, and in some places length limits, apply. They are the same as for other times of the year.
What about using commercial gear like nets on Free Fishing Days?
No. The special event is for sport fishing only. Commercial fishing and the use of commercial fishing gear are not included.
I have never fished. How do I get started?
A simple shortcut is to go fishing with someone who is an experienced angler. You may have heard such a person talk at the office or shop or in your neighborhood. Ask that person if you can go fishing with him or her.
Where is a good place in my area to go fishing?
Make a phone call or a visit in person to any office of the Game and Fish Commission, to a boat dock or to a sport goods outlet. Don’t be shy about asking questions. Everyone was a beginner in fishing at some time.
What do I need besides a rod and reel and some bait or lures?
If you go out in a boat, you’ll need one properly fitted life jacket for everyone onboard and it’s always a good idea to wear it. You’ll probably want sunscreen, drinking water and snacks too. Wear a cap or hat.
