Cape Girardeau Nature Center Hosting Bluebird Habitat Program

The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will host “Habitat for Bluebirds” on Feb. 16 from 6:30-8 p.m. This Discover Nature family event is all about bluebirds and how to construct a nest box.

Discover Nature family events are designed to help adults and children explore nature and master outdoor skills together, and this program is great for children ages 8 and up with an adult.

According to Nature Center Manager Sara Turner, bluebirds are great for keeping insect populations down in yards.

“Bluebirds eat large amounts of insects, and eighty percent of a bluebird’s diet comes from insects in the spring, summer and early fall months,” Turner said.

During the winter they benefit from platform feeders and enjoy a variety of bird seed as well as mealworms and raisins, according to Turner.

“Bluebirds are also a joy to have around and watching them raise a family is not only fun, but it also helps their populations grow,” Turner said.

The bluebird population decreased significantly in the United States. This is largely due to the increased use of pesticides, climate change and reduced tree numbers. Building a nest box is a great way to help bluebirds.

This program is just one way the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) strives to work with Missourians to sustain healthy forests, fish and wildlife.
