Twenty counties in Arkansas have been designated as eligible for assistance as a result of severe spring storms earlier this year. The designation comes from the U.S. Agriculture Department and provides compensation assistance for crop losses.

High winds, tornadoes and damaging hail ravaged a wide swath of Arkansas’ agricultural counties between April 23 and May 4, 2010. Declared as primary disaster areas were: Faulkner, Lonoke, Mississippi and Woodruff counties while Arkansas, Cleburne, Conway, Craighead, Crittenden, Cross, Jackson, Jefferson, Monroe, Perry, Poinsett, Prairie, Pulaski, St. Francis, Van Buren and White counties were declared contiguous disaster areas.

Farmers in these designated counties can apply for emergency loans through the Farm Service Agency, and have eight months to do so. Producers are also eligible to apply for the 2010 Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program to help compensate for severe losses.

The Arkansas Farm Service Agency can provide more information at local county Farm Service Agency offices or by calling (501) 301-3000.
