Once again, 5th graders across Missouri are being challenged to create posters in honor of Arbor Day.
The Missouri state level contest winner receives a $50 savings bond and has their poster entered in a national competition. The national winner can earn a $1,000 savings bond as well as an
expenses paid trip to the National Arbor Day celebration.
This year’s theme is “Trees are Terriffic ... In Cities and Towns.” The purpose of the contest is to help educate students about the important role trees play in our environment as well as proper planting and caring of trees.
The contest is held annually and is co-sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation, the national Arbor Day Foundation, the Missouri Forestry Council and Toyota Motor Corporation.
Deadline for entries is February 6, 2009. Teachers wishing to involve their 5th grade students in the contest can order a packet from poster contest coordinator Donna Baldwin by emailing her at . Materials can also be downloaded here: http://mdc.mo.gov/programs/arbor/ . Donna Baldwin is also available by phone to answer teachers’ questions at 573-522-4115, ext. 3111.
The poster displayed with this article was submitted by Katie Lyle, last year’s contest winner. She attends Lewis and Clark Elementary school in St. Peters.
