A new mail scam has invaded the Ozarks area.
This one is claiming to be a legitimate deal from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, but is actually another way con artists have devised to separate innocent people from their hard-earned cash.
The scam begins with a letter and two checks – one is a cashiers check made out in an amount equal to about $3,800. The other is for a sum of nearly $38,000. The thieves want you to deposit the cashiers check as a way of opening a secured bond where they say they will then deposit the larger check.
Only hitch is, when you go to make the deposit, they say they need more money from you since the price of the security bond went up. The scam involves bilking that additional money from you, then canceling the cashiers check just before the cons disappear.
You are not only out whatever additional money these robbers made you pay to initiate the security bonds, but also the amount of the cashiers check now due the bank.
The Missouri Attorney General’s office is aware of the scam and will be investigating.
