An Arkansas State Senate panel endorsed several proposed constitutional amendments, among them a bill that would bring the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission back under the management of the legislature.
The proposal, known as Senate Joint Resolution 11 was introduced by Sen. Terry Smith, D-Hot Springs. If passed, the measure would require the Game and Fish Commission to report to the state Legislature. Amendment 35 of the Arkansas constitution created the commission as an independent agency.
Smith told the panel he thought it was “time that this agency be put back under the executive and the legislative portion of government,” and added that he felt, “ they’re not in tune with Arkansans.”
A joint session of the Arkansas Senate and House panels will review all proposed constitutional amendments from both chambers. The full House and Senate will then review the measures and up to three can be made into proposed constitutional amendments for the 2010 general election ballot.
